The Science Policy Office represents the needs and priorities of Society members to policymakers in Washington, D.C. Even if it feels like what goes on in Washington has nothing to do with you, federal policy does have an impact on how and what research gets done. It is critical that we are a part of the decision-making process to ensure that science is informing federal policies.

The ASA, CSSA, SSSA Congressional Science Fellowship Program is unique opportunity for Society members with an interest in working at the intersection of science and government. For more than 30 years, ASA, CSSA and SSSA have selected a Society member to spend one year in Washington D.C. applying his/her professional and scientific expertise as a special assistant on the staff of a member of Congress or Congressional committee. Consider using your scientific knowledge in a whole new way as the next ASA, CSSA, SSSA Congressional Science Fellow.

Scientists, students, and certified professionals play a vital role in advocating for food, agriculture, and natural resources research. Each year, ASA, CSSA, and SSSA members have the chance to meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to demonstrate the value and impact of scientific research funding.

The next Congressional Visits Day will be held February 24–25, 2026. Members interested in science advocacy can apply through the Excellence in Advocacy Award or the Future Leaders in Science Award.
